Badgers believe in NATURE

Hi guys,

there is an interesting article in Nature 455 (16 October 2008) about the cuts of the university budget proposed by Italy's centre-right government.

Good Bye Wildlife Warrior

Last September 4th our beloved friend Steve Irwin found the death whilst filming a documentary off the cost of Queensland.
I am not able to find the words to express the sadness I feel... Steve was a real warrior, fighting for conservation of wildlife, education and environment. The world loose its wildlife warrior, we loose a friend.
The Italian Badger invite you to visit Steve's site and support his battle for conservation. Become a Wildlife Warrior right now.

Mammals: Marmots and Badgers on Sight for Bolzano's Hunters

Administrators of Bolzano County decided to open the hunting season for 2300 marmots (Marmota marmota) and 150 badgers (Meles meles), in spite of the National Act of 1992 (Legge 11 febbraio 1992, n. 157).

What does it mean administrative autonomy in Alto Adige? For my badger brothers and my marmots friends it means a death sentence.

Please, don't get me wrong. I'm not saying that men should not manage environment or even animal populations, if there is a scientific evidence of ecological risk (i.e.: the case of eradication of alien species).

I simply would prefer more intelligent solutions to ecological problems. I'll give you an example: the Corriere della sera, as many other media, reported today this decision of Bolzano Province. The same journal recently (July 18) reported that in the Park of Dolomiti Bellunesi (Veneto: few kilometres distant from Alto Adige) is running a three-year-project to reintroduce the marmot! A rodents, the journalist say, almost disappeared by these mountains!!! Do you think what I'm thinking?

I know, if you hope men thinking an intelligent solution, you loose your time.

Evolution: Vatican back to creationism?

Pope Benedict XVI is to openly support the creationist so-called "intelligent design theory"? This is what we understand from several news. One is reported by the italian agency ANSA

This step back toward the Middle-Age is also supported by the news that Father George Coyne has been removed from the position of director of the Vatican Observatory (Daily Mail).

Father Coyne is an appreciated astronomer who support, like many other catholic scientists, the Darwin's explanation of evolution.

As I visit a church or any other religious place with the due respect, I would expect the same respect, for our work in the field of science, by the religious authorities. Science deal with facts. Evolution is a fact. Just left the more or less disguised creationism to its place, outside the scientific curriculum.

Welcome to my blog

Hi!

Welcome to my blog.

The Italian Badger will post news and personal comments on different arguments... I'm thinking to biology (mainly mammal or animal biology, of course...), evolution, science, but also italian life and, why not, political issues.

I will try to post my thoughts in English... time is come for my compatriots to finally think globally. However, may be that I will post also in my mother-tongue... Italiano.

See you on my blog.
